Fraser River / Port Mann 500kV Towers & Line Rebuild

Project Description

Location: Port Mann Fraser River Crossing, Coquitlam/Surrey, British Columbia
Details: 500kV, 4 bundle
Completion Date: May, 2013

This project involved the restoration of BC Hydro Circuit 5L044. Work included the replacement of the Coquitlam suspension structure with a new 92 meter dead-end structure, the removal of the existing structure on the Surrey side of the Fraser River, and the replacement of the Surrey dead-end structure with a new 62 meter dead-end structure. In addition, 3km of 500kV 4-bundle conductor was installed after the old conductor was removed.

The line traverses an 8 lane freeway, railway lines, and a major river with an active river port.

The Rokstad Power team coordinated with all stakeholders, including rail operators, Port Metro Vancouver, and the Ministry of Transportation, in order to ensure that construction activities did not affect normal operations.
A key method employed to remove the tower on the southern bank of the Fraser River the used a barge mounted crane. This innovative strategy significantly minimized disruption to the rail operations.

The project was successfully completed in May, 2013.
